Mushroom Day

Posted by Simon under: Woodland Projects.

A few photos from the day. Visit the Gallery for the rest!

impregnating the logs drilling2 help from the whole community

What a spring day, the daffs came out and then the villagefolk,  soon there was hammering and nailing  of log piles together. Then the drillers came in and drilled (over the day 700 holes). The next team was the pluggers and they popped the wooden mushroom dowel in the holes, just before the wax-er comealong, sealing the mushroom in place. Given time we hope to see lots of mushroom come through.

While out in the woods Chris saw a grass snake basking in the sun. so we need to keep some of them piles for the snakes!

Rumours from the North…..The Vikings Cometh!

Posted by Heather under: GinPit Village Chat.

Viking Scouts Found in GinPit Woods

Viking Scouting Party

We have to report that recent rumours from the North are most likely true. For months we have heard tales from our outlying lands and neighbouring provinces of Marauding Norsemen pushing further into our lands. Though our Northern brothers are prone to a telling a good tale (certainly after several tankards of ale…) It would seem that we must take their warning seriously this day and make ready for the impending skirmishes upon our lands.

The confirmation comes direct from some of our own honourable GinPit menfolk. As you know, the woodcutters were hard at work on Feb 22nd, coppicing and making ready the nearby woods for Spring. Our men were that day in the woods, thereabouts and soon after; inspecting both habitats, and flora & fauna alike. Whilst undertaking these tasks, they spotted and ambushed a Viking Scouting Party. Whilst some of the party got away, all were not so lucky!

Our men saw them off  well, and also made discovery of the Scouting Party’s mission – from what we can ascertain it would seem the Vikings are planning to invade our territories in the Summertime, ready to take full advantage of our crops and all the bounty that autumn will bring. We must not let this happen, so begin your preparations and make ready for action. We believe the first skirmish has been planned for August 8th, and we expect to see you all out in force on that day. Assemble on the Village Green, by 12 noon and no later – less you want to miss the Viking skirmishes and the victory celebrations thereafter!

New Habitats & Gourmet Mushroom Logs

Posted by admin under: Woodland Projects.

As there are lots of logs from the tree felling, the logs are being used for a few projects.

Some planters are to be made out of some of them. Another use will be to replace the wildlife habitats that have now rotted away.

As a new project a number of logs will be drilled and then have mushroom plugs in and then in 4 – 12 months there will be mushroom coming through, and will produce mushrooms for up to five years.

Tree Felling

Posted by Simon under: GinPit Village Chat.

On Monday 22nd Feb for Approxmaitely one week there will be a specialist company removing trees in the woodlands. This has been arranged with Red Rose Forest, The council and The Residents Association. The trees to come down have all been marked by Andy Long from Red Rose Forest. We have been lucky and got a grant from the Forestry commission the shortfall is being given by the Residents Association. The next step will be to clear of the land for replanting native English trees.

What a Hoot!

Posted by Philip Winterbottom under: GinPit Village Chat.

Our good friends at the Forestry Commission have kindly donated four “Owl Boxes” to help with our woodland regeneration and conservation project.

We are now looking for suitable sites for the large boxes which have been known to be occupied by Jays and Kestrals as well as owls. Together with our bat and bird boxes the owl boxes make a strong statement about our commitment to wildlife conservation.

We will keep you updated when suitable locations are found in the woodlands around our treasured Village Green

Spooktastic

Posted by Philip Winterbottom under: GinPit Village Chat.

Our plans for a repeat of our spectacular Hallowe’en & Bonfire Bash are well under way.

On Hallowe’en Saturday 31st October 2009, from 7:oo pm; we will once again turn the Gin Pit Woodlands into a floodlight mystical backdrop to our spooktastic Hallowe’en Party.

We will have a large bonfire,  music and traditional games like bobbing for apples to keep your little terrors amused. We will have plenty of grub, black peas, burgers & hotdogs. This year we even have a beer tent to help the proceedings along, including hot mulled wine. For the kids we have Hot Vimto Blood, to wash down the grub, we will have cold drinks too if the heat gets too much.

We hope to provide a few tricks along the way so why not treat the kids and bring them along.  There will be prizes for the best fancy dress so come in costume after your “Trick or Treating”.

This year (weather permitting) we will have a mass launch of Sky Lanterns. There will be no loud bangs from fireworks just a great pet and child friendly family night out.

Sky lanterns will be on sale on the evening a just £5.00 each, or even cheaper if you buy a few.

Scare you there!

Use your mouse to throw him around.

Update from the Bat Cave

Posted by Philip Winterbottom under: GinPit Village Chat.

Within the last few days we have installed the first of our “Sponsored Bat Boxes”.  The boxes have been located in the woodland adjacent to the playground on the Village Green an area known to be frequented by bats.

We will keep an eye on the boxes to see if any bats take up residence, we will have to be pacient it can take up to three years for the bats to locate the boxes and move in.

We are now looking for a site for our second wing of bat boxes.

More updates soon.

What a Fantastic Effort

Posted by Philip Winterbottom under: GinPit Village Chat.

Congratulations to Gin Pit Residents Association for a magnificent Village Fete. The weather was great as was the turn out. Crowds of people enjoyed a great family day out in the sunshine.

The event was well organised and well marshaled. We did not experience the parking and traffic problems of last year, everyone seemed to have a really good time.

The shows put on by the Lincoln County Regulators were loud and exciting. Even Elvis turned up in a faulous 1959 Cadilac.

Part one:

All in all it was a record breaking day, the crowds were bigger than ever, and though the final figures are not yet in, it is clear we raised more money than ever before.

My thanks go to all who worked so hard to make the day one to remember!

There will be a static display of American Cars, a Chuck Wagon, and Saloon for all your refreshment needs.

We have music and many stalls ans side showsto keep the whole family amused.  There will even be ur own version of the Kentucky Derby.

Entry to the event is free so why not round up your Posse and Mosey on Down, to this not to be missed American Themed Family Fun Day!

A Walk For Life

Posted by Philip Winterbottom under: GinPit Village Chat.

On Sunday the 21st June 2009, 27 residents, family and friends from Gin Pit Village gave up their time to undertake a 5 Km walk. The walk was to raise money for Oesophagus Cancer in memory of Joan Barton a long time resident of the Village who tragically died of the disease just before Christmas.

Joan was a popular member of the community known to many of the children as the “Flower Lady”. She could often be seen pottering around tending to her much cherished plants from dawn to dusk.

As a result of the walk £312 has been raised so for to support people with this little known cancer.  The money raised will be donated to Macmillan nurses.  Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer. If you were unable to take part in the walk but wish to contribute in memory of Joan please pass you donations to Jeanette at 19 Peace Street or Tracy at 3 Meanley Road. You may also make a donation via our website. www.ginpit-village.org

Is it a UFO?

Posted by Philip Winterbottom under: GinPit Village Chat.

Reports have been seen in the local press of strange objects in the sky over Lowton, Leigh and Atherton. Eyewitnesses report eerie glowing objects traversing the sky, sometimes very quickly.

Are these strange glowing objects visitors form Outer Space? Are they UFO’s?

We don’t think so……………………………………………………………………………………

Some of the sightings coincide with known launches of Sky Lanterns from Gin Pit Village. And as we sold so many Lanterns last year we would not be surprised if this explains the other sightings.

After the phenomenal success of last years Halloween and Bonfire Bash, we are repeating this spectacular event. The Residents Association will once again be transforming the Woodlands around Gin Pit into a Mystical Backdrop for our 2009 Halloween Bash with a large Bonfire. This years event takes place on Halloween itself 31st October 2009.

This is a pet and child friendly event with no loud bangs from fireworks, though we can’t guarantee a few other scary sounds though the night. There will be prizes for the best fancy dress and plenty of seasonal treats. This years event will feature a mass launch of Sky Lanterns, so we are notifying the press in advance.

Don’t miss out on the fun get your Sky Lanterns early whilst stocks last. Lanterns can be purchased at just £5.00 each via or website www.ginpit-village.org or by contacting us on 01942 894349. (Discounts available for purchases of 10 or more)
